Ichthammolointment is a traditional medicine for topical use on the skin, with astringent and antibacterial properties, prepared in accordance with the prescription of the Polish Pharmacopoeia. Ichthammol ointment is recommended for use in the treatment of skin eczema, boils and acne. In addition, ichthyol has an antiedematous and topical warming effect. Ichthammol is a product of the dry distillation of bituminous shale, with a characteristic odor and dark red color.
Ichthyol comes in two varieties: dark and light. The dark fraction is found in ichthyol ointment, while the light ichthyol appears in Mediderm shampoo. Ammonium sulfobituminate, as ichthyol is also sometimes called, has a multidirectional effect. First of all, it is anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic, anti-oedematous and aids in the extraction of pus. The substance has been used in pharmacy formulas since the 16th century. It is sometimes confused with tar, due to its similar manufacturing process and use.
